The 407 visa provides you with the opportunity to travel to Australia temporarily to undertake workplace-based occupational training to improve your skills for your career or field of study. This visa is a stepping stone to permanent residency in Australia and provides a variety of benefits and opportunities for hopeful migrants.

In this blog, we will provide a brief overview of the SC 407 visa and the different types of workplace-based occupational training activities. We will then consider the nomination requirements for the purpose of obtaining occupational training to improve skills in an eligible qualification. Finally, we will discuss how the 407 visa can help you in your journey to Australian Permanent Residency.

The 407 visa is granted for up to two years. To apply for the 407 visa, you must meet the following basic eligibility requirements:

  • Be 18 years or older
  • Have functional English language proficiency i.e., IELTS score of 4.5 or PTE score of 30.
  • Be a genuine temporary entrant
  • Have an approved temporary activities sponsor
  • Be nominated to participate in the workplace-based occupational training activity. If your sponsor is an Australian Commonwealth Government agency, then you must be invited.

What are the requirements for nomination for the 407 visa?

There are three types of occupational training you can participate in while on the SC 407 visa. These include:

  1. Occupational training required for registration

This work-based training is for people who are seeking to work in an occupation requiring registration, membership, or licensing in Australia or their home country.

  1. Occupational training to improve skills in an eligible occupation

This activity is for people who are seeking to work in Australia in an occupation specified in the list of occupations for a SC 407 visa

  1. Occupational training for capacity building overseas

This training activity comprises of three categories:

  • Training for students who are enrolled in foreign education institutions and are required to complete a practical training to obtain their qualification.
  • Training that is supported by a government agency in Australia or in the trainee’s home country.
  • Classroom teaching in Australia for overseas managerial or professional level employees to undergo professional development training.

The nomination requirements differ depending on the type of occupational training.

Occupational training to improve skills in an eligible occupation

To qualify under this nomination type, the training must be a structured workplace-based training program that is:

  • Related to an occupation on the skilled occupations list for a SC 407 visa and
  • For a period required to meet the skill level for the nominated occupation as stipulated by ANZSCO.

The nominee must have at least 12 months of prior relevant experience in that nominated occupation in the last two years prior to lodging the nomination for the SC 407 visa.

What are the occupations that qualify for a SC 407 visa?

The occupations listed in the occupations list for a SC 407 visa are further categorized into the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL), Regional Occupation List (ROL), and Short‑term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL).

Some occupations on the MLTSSL include early childhood (preprimary school) teacher (241111), Registered nurse, ICT business analyst (261111), civil engineering draftsperson (312211), and chef (351311).

The ROL includes occupations such as dentist (252312), project builder (133112), and aeroplane pilot (231111), while the STSOL includes occupations like sales and marketing manager (131112), cafe or restaurant manager (141111), hotel or motel manager (141311), and hairdresser (391111).

Pathway to Australian Permanent Residency

The SC 407 visa allows you to undertake training to meet the skills of your nominated occupation as prescribed by ANZSCO, which will qualify you to obtain a skill assessment in that nominated occupation.

With a positive skill assessment and the relevant work experience in your nominated occupation, you can then apply for a Temporary Skill Shortage (SC 482) visa. This visa is granted for a period of two or four years depending on the stream which provides you ample time to obtain further work experience to qualify for permanent residency through the Employer Nomination Scheme (SC 186) visa - Temporary Residence Transition stream.

Alternatively, you may qualify to apply directly for permanent residency if you meet the eligibility requirements for the Employer Nomination Scheme (SC 186) visa – Direct Entry stream.
